On Mash (the show) one time someone was trying to kill himself so the colonel tried to force him to kill himself - and suddendly the guy didn't want to die so badly. He actually fought against the colonel to keep himself alive. (I wouldn't recommend this though.)
These people don't actually want to die. They don't know what to do and they want someone to help them. Its the only thing they can think to do. They've tried everything else!
Tell him you're calling 911 and do it. If he wants attention - he should have it. Then you can tell him that the chances of dying from his wound is very low. What will more likely happen is that he will stay alive and be in great pain.

Well,by now I'm sure your friend isn't still holding a knife to his throat so....in the future you should seek more immediate help then yahoo Q&A.

Take the knife and any other weapons away. Take your friend to someone (church, counselor) to talk about it.

um get off the computer, then go and call 911. and help him to say the Lord's prayer.
