Most often either something very unpleasant looming in the future or a sense that there's nothing in the future except the same old same-old. Often there's a sense of having no social bonds remaining, either because others are too wicked and cold or because they themselves are flawed and failed. So it might come down to a feeling that there's just a painful present, with nothing like a future at all ... just grey ... just chill ... and empty.

What it comes down to is "more than I can take" ... the decision has to be made in the moment. But that's the thing: "Almost hit the dtich" is way different than "Hit the ditch" ... know what I mean?

You asked your question real well ... maybe a typo, but still. Think of this: what draws a person towards a fire VS what gets a person to jump into a fire ... big difference, yes? So ... and here's a good one: Albert Camus wrote "The first question of philosophy must be that concerning suicide." (BTW he didn't win the Nobel Prize for _philosophy_, though his non-fiction are awesome; he won for Literature. Ever heard of "The Stranger"? No no, not "Stranger in a Strange Land" huh huh ... anyhow, that's by him.)

Camus' point, like what I'm trying at here, isn't so much "Why do some people consider suicide?" as much as "How come so very many of us consider it but so few of us do it?" What keeps us going? Ok ... now, take that and stand it on it's head: when whatever keeps us going (as we bumble and stumble along), when that gives way ... when that gets weak ... well, I can trip without falling, but when I'm really weak or really tired or really sick and tired ... another day I might not have fallen; another person might not have fallen ... but in that aweful moment some of us fall, when we trip.

So let's not trip one another up, yaa?
:-)

suicide is a state of mind. there are those who contemplate suicide as they can't face the consequences of what they've done wrong. most are usually in a place that unless you've been there is hard to understand. depression, dis pair, quilt, loneliness, failure, grief.the feeling of frustration that no matter what you do or how you try it's not enough.in some instances via culture if a woman is at threat from rape she is permitted to commit suicide rather than be dishonoured.there are some who do it for attention and even that should tell you they have an underlying problem. if person is seriously contemplating suicide they will usually plan it in such a way that they can carry it out uninterrupted.

I think is dipression, and extreme dissapointment. Sometime people feel that suicide is the way out of the problem, but what they forget is there will be more chances if one stays in fight. I can say this coz I have gone through this face, I attempted suicide when I failed in love with a girl whom I loved the most, I got heavily drunk and was about to electricute my self, some how some forces stopped me and look at me today, I found better partners -- though still not a success -- it takes guts to love me, is my attitude now.

Sometimes: cessation of a life of pain.

Noble men of feudal Japan would end their life at the prospect of living a life without honor. They uphold honor, their family, and society through seppaku. Kamikazees were the most lauded men for their time.

Socrates drank the hemlock to uphold the law.
Jesus did not flee from his persecutors either.

Depression isn't the half of it.
The transcendent values are made available.
Life itself is questioned. The act CAN BE quite heroic.

and you're missing it if you think it's purely escape.
Sacrificing your life for the greater good is often idealized.

i'm not sure, but when i was a kid, i used to think suicide was a way of getting attention that i deserved, but didn't get. as i get older, suicide seems like the easy way out for someone who can't handle the pressures of the world. i also think that many may have an imbalance in their head.

Lack of meaning.
Its not ignorance coz i know some highly inteligent and wise people who've considered it.
Its not despair or suffering coz EVERY suicide statistic rises with the "wealth" and "prosperity" of a country. Its just an overwhelming flood of entertainment and pleasure which blinds us to appreciation to life and true meaning.
Thats just my opinion though.

No apparent way out of a seemingly insoluable problem and an inflexibility to see all angles of the problem.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

mb they feel lonely and nobody cares for them, and if people do care for them, they haven't been reminded enough. They loose hope and self-confidence which makes them happy but is gone and happiness is gone so they are alone. In a severe state of depression and they want to die thinking nobody cares OR mb something bad has happened and if they die they wont have to deal with it, and they have nothing left to believe in.

i've studied a little about suicidal activities. i believe the main reason why people choose to end their life is that they cannot recieve full understanding/concern/sympathy from other people.
