Speaking from experience, point out the differences in practical terms and offer to pay for at least half of it yourself. It would be best to just save up on your own and buy it. It'll show your parents that you're willing to work for what you want, and if you keep it up they might be more into helping with big expenses later (such as college, car repairs, etc.).

Pay for Half
Show them a Screenshot for Madden 07 on PS2 and then on PS3 to compare the graphics or realness or the difference

tell them it's twice as strong as the ps2 that's why it's called the new generation of console gaming. Tell them the graphics are amazing and it'll keep u busy for hours. U can also tell them that every videogamer in the world wants one because it's true.

show them the sony web site that states blue ray player is $999
but the ps3 is $600 with more features. dvd will be a thing of the past

tell them it has video conference built in which means if your relatives get it you guys can talk across your ps3 for free
even cheaper than a phone
plus its got blue ray disc, which is going to be the next wave instead of dvds, so they will have something to play blue rays on

Tell them that you can sell you ps2 on ebay to help pay for it also sell whatever you have that you are no longer interested in on ebay and put that towards it !!!

Records to 8tracks to Tapes to CDs to MP3s...
sound quality will be from cassette tapes to cds
visual difference will be like VHS tapes to DVDs...
