Is the excessive use of a horse for private profit not abuse of the animal? If they break their legs, they are usually 'humanely' euthanized becuase they serve no purpose.

What say you?

Of course it would be treated better than a horse in the wild. The reason it is wild is becuase it roams freely and has no human caregivers. :)

I would have to say yes.Don't get me wrong, there are people in the racing world who love their horses. But I used to be in the racing world, and as an industry as a whole it is a cruel sport.

Horse are started way to young, before they are done growing and from racing which is hard on them they break down at a young age.Go to your local auction and visit the kill pens sometime, they are full of TB's waiting to be slaughtered and shipped to be dinner to some wealthy European.
I had to get out of the racing scene and am now dedicated to rescuing STB's and TB's.I can't begin to tell you the horror stories of what I have seen at the track. So many owners cast them aside because they are to slow and just don't cut it at the track.I think if they were started at 3-4 yrs old it would make it a lot better. But money talks and the sooner they get them racing the more money they make.I have even heard of some trainers getting on them at 1 yr old!
Like I said before,I am sure there are people that take care and pride of their horses that race. But from what I have seen I think it is a cruel sport.Just my opinion from being involved in this industry for several years.

In the most basic form of horse racing, where you take horses and their riders and compete legitimately, it is not animal cruelty, it is normal competition. The horses are at their natural peak and it is a competition of natural physical superiority. Now, there are so many agendas, and so much money on the line, that it is not a clean sport.

Horse racing in its purest form is not any more animal cruelty than normal horseback riding is. Horse racing today often is because the horses are just machines. When the machine breaks, you throw it out and get a new one.

There are people in the racing industry who are cruel to their animals. But there are also some really great people in the industry. I worked for a man who when thehorse retired from racing we found a new home for the horse where they could be re-trained and taught a new job.
If it was a mare and of good blood lines she satyed on the farm and went into the breeding program.
He cared very much for his horses and they were like pets. They all had names and would come running up when you went to the fence. They knew they would get treats.
I do not think it is cruel but some people are.

No it's not. As long as they are treated fairly and with kindness there's nothing wrong with it. They don't torture the animal to train it. And they don't get euthanized "because they serve no purpose." They do this (and not all the time) because it's painful to have a broken leg, and just like people it's tough to use the limb again, and requires a long period of physical therapy and pain. Grown men can't stand the pain. And, since a horse weighs so much the bone that broke may not be able to safely carry and/or support the full weight of the animal.

that is the way of having and enjoying sports. Horse racing is considered cruelty if the horse is used often enough to break a leg and get injured.

many of the kentucky derby horse owners treat their horse ; better than their children. horse racing is also exercise. the last horse that was injured in the last derby was treated like a king. he is now recuperating and going to stud. this is worth millions to the owner.

what i say is yes and no, because a winning race horse is often treated like a king, but the actual racing can be hard on them.
