I keep hearing Americans claim Bell was American or seeing Canadians claim he was Canadian. But in actual fact he was British. He was born, raised & educated in Scotland. So how can he be American or Canadain?

Alexander Graham Bell was born in 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He moved to Ontario, and then to the United States, settling in Boston, before beginning his career as an inventor

The real question to ask, is did he ever obtain citizenship in the US? Unfortunately he did. But he did this in 1888 well after the invention of the telephone. This was largely due to the fact that he married an American.

Canadians were not Canadian citizens until 1942. But we think of anyone who came from the British Isles and settled here as Canadians by default. People from other countries became officially British subjects, and thus Canadians by default.

So when Bell moved with his family from Scotland to Brantford, Ontario in 1870, he became a Canadian. Then became a US citizen in 1888.
