before we was a predator, just like bears, sharks, lions and tigers. now we are just messing everything up.

We began as predators and gatherers. Owing to our ability to make and use weapons and to hunt in packs, we learned to protect ourselves and our kind against the animals that preyed on us. With this security, we were able to learn to grow the plants we gathered and to keep as cattle many of the beasts we hunted. We began to breed varieties of each which were better suited to food. Many of these plants and animals might have become extinct if it were not for this action, so in a sense we became preservers of our environment.

To say that we are 'top of the food' chain is simplistic because, like other animals, our waste and our bodies when we die become food for minute organisms which, in turn, help to fertilise the soil so that our animal fodder and crops will grow. That is why it's a cycle and not a chain.
