First, take a photograph of the damage to your child's face. Write down what your child said, and the date and time of the supposed attack by the teacher. Go to the police and file a report that your child was attacked in school, allegedly by the teacher (it will have to be proven before it becomes "true"). Let them know you are going next to bring this to the attention of the principal, and ask for two copies of the report you filed (one for you, one for the principal).
Then, go straight to the principal, tell him/her what your child said happened, and give him/her a copy of the report. If the child claims the teacher hit "them," was more than one child involved? The principal should call in the teacher involved to talk to privately, immediately, and other students who might have been witnesses, so that he/she can get a picture from multiple sources of what happened.
The possibilities both the principal and the police MUST look at include:
--the teacher really did lose his/her self-control, and must be immediately fired/arrested
--another student hit your child, and the child is both trying to avoid retaliation from the other kid and also get a disliked teacher into trouble
--your child busted his/her lip by falling or some other means, and is trying to get a disliked teacher into trouble
If the principal "brushes you off," go immediately to central office and talk with the superintendent.
Keep documentation of everything, including a spiral notebook with dates and times of each conversation, and what was said. You may also have a lawsuit if the teacher really did do this.

First I would talk with the teacher to see if it was true. If it was, you should report the teacher to his/her principal, notify the superintendent of schools, and file charges against the teacher with the police. There is never a need for a teacher at any level to strike a student.
Good luck.

First I would have an immediate conference with the teacher and principle, if it turns out to be true, I would demand the police be brought in and that the teacher be severely reprimanded by the school and the school district, and that it stays on his permanent record. If it turns to not be true, I would make certain your child is given a discourse on what falsifying information can do to an adult, and require him to go to his teacher and tell him/her what he said and apologize.

I would find out the real story. Alot of times, children don't wish to tell anyone about bullies at school and make up things to cover it up.
I'm not saying thats the case, but i would find out before making an accusation against the teacher and to the police.

First, make sure you have the truth! Kids sometimes lie and you will be embarrassed to death if it turns out your child was in a fight with another child and lied so you wouldn't get angry at him/her. Not to mention that the teacher could then countersue you for slander and defamation of character. Get your facts first!
Next step is to approach the school board and, of course, you can always file charges against the teacher.
In the meantime, also teach your child about respectful classroom behavior...which means to keep his/her mouth shut and to pay attention. He/she is in class to learn, not to socialize. Socialization can be done during lunch and breaks.

I would go talk to the teacher. Then either hit the teacher and or have him arrested. I also would take my child out of that school.

Abuse is wrong for the child and the teacher......taking it and giving it.
Facts, not opinions ,need to be clarified first. Misunderstandings occur and get blown out of proportion. To "save face", many a creative story can be told and then more "save faces" follow.
Be careful what you say or do before ALL sides have explained.

I'd make sure that it wasn't a bully at school and that he just doesn't want to tell you. If it was actually a teacher, take pictures of it for evidence and sue the teacher.
