I have checked the oil, its fine..opened the engine coolant, and there wasn't a whole lot of fluid in there..is there something i can use to fix this quickly? I currently do not have any Dex-Coolant or any Coolant available, and i don't trust taking the car out now. Would maybe like half a litre of water help, if just for a bit?

Just put a 50/50 mix of water and anti freeze in, and the lights should go out

I have the same problem on my 97 sunfire. The mechanic found a slight leak and will fix them in 2 days.

I googled this topic and found this

YOUR PROBLEM IS THE INTAKE MANIFOLD IS FAULTY.

I HAD SAME PROBLEM, BUT THEY CHANGED MANIFOLD AND DIDNT CHANGE THE HEAD GASKETS.

SO TO FIX THE PROBLEM HAVE THEM REPLACE THE HEAD GASKETS AND A NEW MANIFOLD.

THE GRAND AMS HAVE A PLASTIC TYPE MANIFOLD AND IT WARPS.

MINE WAS FIXED BY OCEAN CITY CHEVROLET IN NORTH CAROLINA.

Overflow the coolant

Pontiac grand AM coolant light... - AUTO - Motorcycle/Car ...

Your coolant light of your 97 sunfire 2.2 came on and it is full with radiator fluid what else can this be the light wont go off?
Answer

There is a sensor that is in the overflow bottle that may be bad causing the "low coolant light" to illuminate.

answer

The coolant level switch is located on the bottom side of the coolant tank. The switch contains a reed switch and a magnetic float. When the coolant level is normal, the float rests away from the reed switch, causing the switch to be open. When the coolant level decreases in the coolant recovery tank below a specified level, the float rests on the reed switch and the switch closes, illuminating the LOW COOLANT light. The coolant level switch is a part of the coolant tank. If the switch needs to be replaced, the coolant tank must be replaced.

First of all DO NOT drive the car without coolant. You'll blow your engine. First go to your auto store and get a gallon of coolant/antifreeze. Then pour half into a seperate container and fill it back up with water. Then pour it into your radiator and squeeze the hose to push out any bubbles and keep filling it until it won't take anymore. Then check your resevoir and make sure its filled to the 'cold level' . Then you can run your car but keep your eyes on your temp gauge cuz if you drove w/o coolant you coulda f*cked up your thermostat. If it doesn't overheat you're ok. But for right now, if you need the car and are only missing a little fluid, you can go ahead and fill it up with tap water and run it. What people dont' know is that you can use regular water for missing fluid, cuz water cools faster than coolant. BUT its not a good idea to run it like that for extended periods of time. A good 50/50 mix is best for a regular daily driver.

Do not put regular water into the cooling system. This will rust the inside of your engine cooling system and will be very expensive to repair down the line. Just go to the parts store and buy a gallon of Dex-cool coolant it is anti corrosive and pink in color. most likely your waterpump is leaking. I suggest you add the dex-coolant before you end up paying a lot to get a head gasket job done.

If the engine is overheating, you need to take it to a garage asap. May the the fan not turning on causing it to run hot or you may have a coolant leak. Once you repair the overheat problem have the garage clear the codes and the lite should go away.

Nothing you can use quickly, and no I wouldn't add water to it. Find another mode of transportation to a store and get some coolant. It's suppose to be a 50/50 mix.

Well, there is evidently something wrong. If you have your car's handbook, you can look and see exactly what that means. Most likely your coolant level is low. You can buy more coolant...like Prestone at any grocery store. Look in the handbook to see where you put it in or ask someone who knows about cars.

Check your coolant system. Your water pump may need replacing

if you checked the RADIATOR and it needs fluid you can add water, if you checked the COOLANT TANK and it is low, you can only add antifreeze, the overflo tank is not as important as having a full radiator.
