The gauge will read full until I am low on fuel. Then it will read around a 1/4 of a tank. One time the gauge dropped from 1/4 to empty, and the light came on. I got about 4 blocks and the car was out of gas. I now use the trip odometer to keep track of the milage between fuel stops. When it gets around 200 - 225 miles I full it up. I heard the is a service bulliten, but can not find anything on it. Is there a Service bulliten? What is the cause and fix?

I also have a 2000 Malibu, but in my case the spedometer has broken... it registers 0 mph for a while, then after 10-15 minutes of driving it will work normally. I bet there's a problem with the guages and how they were designed... I looked for a service bulletin but couldn't find anything on it. The best fix is probably taking it to a trusty mechanic and coughing up the $150...

It definitely sounds like the fuel gauge is broken. I would keep using the trip odometer to keep track of the miles. I would also see if Chevy? has a service bulletin? .

as mentioned before you probably have a defective sending unit. get an ohmmeter and check the resistance between the two sending unit leads. now ou will need to find out what the normal resistance is for a good sending unit. you can either buy a childens repair manual or get this info from a mechanic. if your resistance is way out of the required parameters then change the unit. this should fix the problem.

Sounds like you have a defective fuel sending unit. 99 percent of the time it is the unit that goes bad. The float may be hanging up giving you that full reading, once the float drops, it reads empty.
Good luck
