Well, they walked a lot. Horses weren't used for transportation in cities in ancient times. They were mostly used for hauling carts -- like delivery trucks. They were also used for pulling two-wheeled carts in battle, but these weren't used in day to day transportation either. It would be like taking a tank down to the local store.
Cities in ancient times were much smaller, and walking wasn't that great a chore. If you were well off, you could have someone carry you. Or two, four or six someones, who would lift you up on a contrivance called a palaquin. Incidentally, where do you think the word 'carriage' came from? Initially, the contrivance was carried. Not until much, much later was it put on wheels and pulled by another animal.
People also skiied, snowshoed, swam, etc. Mostly, they relied on foot power.

People are always trying to find something to do the hard work for them. So when they got tired of walking around with their own feet, they started looking for something to ride on. They didn't get very far just by walking. So they started riding anything they could catch, like camels, and elephants, and other people, then horses and eventually cars.

They had to walk everywhere but there were also boats. As for horses, they have been around for as long as people I think! People just couldn't travel so far before there were cars. It would have taken days to travel between some cities but now you can cross the Atlantic in hours.

great question, Gaby! I know people rode and still ride on horses but before horses? Wow, you will stump many grown-ups with that one. My answer would have to be by raft, like Tom Sawyer. You should read a book by Mark Twain about this particular young boy.
PS- thank your parents for encouraging you to ask many questions. That is the best way for you to learn!

Before horses? Really...do you think humans can't move without the help of some OTHER object...I'm sure they moved WAY back before the wheel was even invented!

I don't think human beings predated horses, they've been around just as long as us, probably much longer. Also, people weren't as lazy before cars as they are now, so they walked where they had to go.

Camels, donkeys, and by foot. But it didn't take civilization too long to figure out they could use horses and camels for travel...

Well, first they used their feet, then some of them (the richer ones) got carried in Sedan Chairs, that other people carried for them.
