I'm in the Chicago area. I already have a career, but people are always saying I have an amazing radio voice so I'd like to give it a try. I just don't know where to start.

This article explains how to break into the business: http://www.voiceacting.com/archives/23breaking-in/

Sorry to say, it's a matter of luck.
Yes, you need a great voice, and you need to know how to use it (or else that great voice is wasted), but you also need that "break".

Best of luck!

It is a pretty closed shop, but new talent has to come from somewhere, right?

You would benefit greatly from having an agent who can help you put together a demo -- done in mp3 a lot, so they can be emailed for the audition.-- and there are a number of good agents and agencies in Chicago.

The website I'velinked has a lot of good advice for getting started... including the specific article I linked on finding an agent.

Good luck -- and know that the people who succeed are not always the most talented, but are certainly the most driven.

Typically, voiceover performers have been doing it for years, and is, thus, a "closed shop," meaning rarely do new people enter the field. Contact some voiceover agents in Chicago, perhaps they can guide you.
