NO WAY. I few months back there was a story in the news about a girl who died, actually DIED, after her navel piercing, which she did at home, became infected. Please don't do that to yourself.

Stick your finger right in your navel. Do you feel that sensitive pinch or poke feeling? Navels are nerve centers in your body, and can be extremely painful and dangerous to pierce if done incorrectly. That's why it costs so much to get it done professionally, because piercers are trained to know where and how to do it safely. If you were talking about your earlobes, I'd say go for it, but not your navel.

Additionally, please don't get it done at Claire's, those people don't know what they're doing, either, and the guns can't be properly sanitized.

Please, don't do it. Professionals use instruments which have been cleaned by a machine. You could easily get an infection. And your body will probably reject it. What's more, they've been trained to locate where to pierce exactly. People sometimes get an infection when they pierce their ears themselves. Well, if you pierce your navel yourself, I don't know the odds, but you're pretty sure to get one.

Is it that expensive? I paid $50 (in England, and it's about the same price in France) about 7 years ago. $100 seems a lot: It should not be that expensive. Go check other places.

NO!!! This is NOT "easily done at home". Even when done by professionals, infection can set in there pretty easily, I'd say even easier if you do it yourself. Let's face it, home piercings are hardly the height of sanitation.
Think of it this way: $100 to pierce it (if you REALLY want it done), versus $5 worth of needles and alcohol to do it at home, PLUS whatever your doctor's co-pay is and antibiodics when you get a raging infection and spend the summer in pain.
Do NOT try this at home!

Dont get scared away by peoples 'horror' stories. Different people have different results. Dying from a piercing sounds like a bunch of bull to me. Now, I have been told by my piercer that belly button rings can cause paralyzation from the waist down. However, its verrrrrrrrrrrry rare. I wouldnt worry myself about all the negative things people tell you. You are your own person and if you want to do it yourself... go ahead. Who are they to judge anyways?

I pierced my sisters and she pierced mine.

But they arent expensive to get them done in a studio. Except $25-40 depending where you go.

If you want to do it at home dont use a safety pin. If you can buy things on Ebay... check there. The have lil kits that have the needle, clamps, jewelry, and everything else for like $10-20. And the materials are sterilized ( they have the little sterile dot things indicating they have been sterilized. I would have a friend do it for you. That way, you can lay back and it will bring a lot more ease to it.

unless your a professional, no

this is one of the most problematic piercings even when its done by a professional, due to healing times and pressure from clothes on the piercing

do not attempt to pierce this yourself for the sake of saving a bit of money... the last thing you want is this ruining your summer and possibly costing you more money having to sort out any infections or problems

It is never safe to do it for yourself that is why their are people trained to do it. Go to a piercing shop and if you are too young and your parents said no wait.

no. Get it done right for the risks of infection. Gross pus and sore redness is not a fun way to start the summer.
