Have you ever tried Melatonin? That worked really well for me when I had insomnia.
Other things you may have heard:
Take a hot bath or shower to relax.
Do some yoga or meditation to relax.
Make sure you're not drinking lots of caffeine or working out right before bed.
Try to not rely on a chemical to 'knock you out'-- it gets so mental that you believe you can't sleep without it (even if MDs claim it's not addictive)
Good luck-- I know how it stinks when you can't sleep.

Ambien is what I use as well but it doesn't keep me asleep long. I really feel for you. I have always had sleep problems and it is sooo frustrating. Maybe your doctor could give you something to help you relax at night like 10mg Valium. Its addictive if you use it more often so be careful. It works for me and also I have ringing in my ears and it works with that to. Other that medicine try www.webmd.com there is alot of recommendations there in the sleep center. Good luck I hope you get better,

I had sleeping problems until I started working out. Also a cheap way to fall asleep is
Tylenol PM, even cheaper is the Walmart brand Equate PM (works just as good) it works so good sometimes I just take a half of a pill. I use to do this before I started exercising. Also listening to classical music helps, or reading a good book like the bible. Good luck :) p.s. my husband uses it too and it works. If all of those medicines do not work, you might need to get some kind of stress management.

I would tell your doctor this and ask if he has any samples of ambien - if i get prescribed a drug that's expensive i always ask my doc for samples they are more than happy to give them out - also - exercise is good - I'm lazy so i hate exercising myself lol - also this is really an out there suggestion but masturbation always knocks me out -(When i was single) i did it before bedtime - if you have a partner that can rub your back when you get in bed that really relaxes you also... good luck hope these help ...

Do things to tire yourself out like exercise more in the day and eat more carbs. Turkey often tires people out. Have a nice hot bath and read a boring book. Chew some valarian root - get it at the stores that sell organic, earthy hippie kinds of foods and vitamins.

try something natural , either one or a combination of all of them should definitely give you a good nights sleep.
1. Have a regular end of day pattern, as in sleep at for e.g.10.00 p. everyday and before that have dinner at 9.30 p. everyday. if you are hungry at 9.00p. postpone it. if its ready at 10.00p. go to sleep without eating.
I know thats mean, but believe me, it works, its called your body's natural rhythm, and you can set it, once set, the moment you finish dinner, you will be sleeping.
2. Have a glass of cold milk before sleeping, (in our mock e.g that would be at 10.00)
3. Have a long shower before sleep (try to fit it in the end-of day pattern)
4. Get the most comfortable pillow, mattress etc. Make sure the room temperature is cool, not much lights in the room, and make your bedroom as free of phones, TV, music, computer as possible. All distractions should be placed in the TV room?!
5. Have a head bath (and dont dry it, it works for me , even when I dont want to go to sleep), not an official remedy though.
6. never take sleep tablets (I dont think they do any good)
7. And this is something my grandmother taught me, count numbers (well I used to go to 10000, when I cant sleep, but hey keep counting, you will get bored of it)
8.Dont take your day's worry to bed, clear your mind of all thoughts, think absolutely nothing (actually that puts me to sleep in 2 secs, it works)
9.Work-out, exercise, go out for a walk, get tired, that should work.
Thats my thesis on sleeping.
Its anybody's guess, I ve mastered the art of sleeping (like a baby) ;)

Drugs will hurt your ability to sleep over time. Fasting can help you sleep better than ever. Below site has quotes by 8 MDs about it.
