THE MAIN DIFERENCE ARE:
AMERICAN FOOTBALL OR FOOTBALL
Championship
The american football known in the United States and Canada simply as football, has an american body governing this sport only for USA and Canada Teams, which has each year a football calendar with the culmination of a final, where the world champion is crown.
Ball
This game is played with a oval or vesica piscis shape ball, and usually has a large set of stitches along one side.
Game duration
A standard football game consists of four 15-minute periods (called quarters), with an intermission (called halftime) after the second quarter. The clock stops after certain plays; therefore, a game can last considerably longer.
Team
Each team has 11 players on the field at a time. However, teams may substitute for any or all of their players, if time allows, during the break between plays.

Points
Points can be scored in a variety of ways, including carrying the ball over the goal line (6 points value), throwing the ball to another player past the goal line (6 points value) or kicking (3 points value), and capturing the quaterback in his own end zone (2 poinsts value)

SOCCER OR FOOTBALL
World Championship
There is in an international body governing this sport, so it's safe to say that soccer is the exactly same sport in every part of the world, and it is call football instead of soccer (only USA reference this game like soccer).
The international governing body is referred to as FIFA, from the French "Federation Internationale de Football Associatif" (International Federation of Associative Football). The FIFA defines a soccer calendar and the culmination of it is the World Cup which is held every 4 years at alternating locations.
Ball
Soccer is played with a round ball so that you can kick it.
Game duration
A standard football game consists of 2 45-minute periods (called half), with an intermission (called halftime) after the first half. The clock doesn't stops, but extra time is added to each half.
Advancing the ball
The point of the game is to make the ball go into the net. When you play soccer you can not touch the ball with your hands or arms. You can touch the ball almost with any part of your body, for example with your head, foot, chest or knee.
Team
Each team has 11 players on the field. However, teams may substitute only 3 players, during the game. Only the goalie can touch the ball with the hands inside the goal zone.
Field
The field of play must be rectangular. Length: 110-120 yards (105-110 meters) , Width: 70-80 yards (68-75 meters)
Points
Points can be scored in one way, making the ball go into the net and has a value of 1 point and it is call gol.

I like American football and FIFA football (aka soccer).
Some Americans prefer more scoring. It's really about inflation. Today, Ecuador beat Poland 2-0. In American football, 2 scores to zero would be 14-0. Then, American football fans would be happy "with all that scoring".
Another factor is nationalism. The big four of American sports (baseball, basketball, football, and ice hockey) were either "invented" in America, or Americans believe that they were invented here. If soccer had been "invented" in America, it would be more popular here.

americans are big on higher scores: basketball, then football mainly. to most americans, a skillful match between Arsenal
(with Thierry Henry) and Real Madrid (with David Beckham) that finishes 1-nil or a scoreless tie would be like kissing a sister!
...and I'm an american that likes soccer and hockey as well as football and hoops.

:D American hasn't quite built up their soccer program like some of the other countries. (ex. Brazil) so meanwhile, most americans have hooked onto other sports. But me, i'm going to be yelling at my tv screen for the next month. I'm crazy about soccer.
