A transfer switch doesn't plug in. It needs to be wired into the main circuit breaker panel. So I don't think you are referring to a transfer switch. Also, the rules for connecting generators and transfer switches are more complicated than basic electrical wiring, so I suggest getting a licensed electrician to wire the transfer switch for your generated. The L 14 20 is not a switch it is a plug/receptacle.

After I wrote the above I realized maybe you meant you already have a transfer switch hardwired in your home and you have an inlet (not an outlet since it gives power to the transfer switch) that you need to connect to the generator. Go to
http://www.jhlarson.com/ind_tables/nema/nema_lock.htm and http://www.jhlarson.com/ind_tables/nema/nema_straight.htm for locking and normal plugs and tell me what you have for the inlet. I assume it has male prongs and you need a female receptacle on one end of the cord and the L14-20P plug on the other end for the generator. When you identify the type of plug I can help you more, but it should be 4 wire like the generator and you need 4 wire cable (2 hot plus white neutral and green or bare ground). The gauge of wire should be at least 12, depending on how long it needs to be.

Best suggestion i can offer is to go to Home Depot and buy an "UGLY'S" book. Yes that is the title of it. Is $9 and has diagrams of cord caps(plug) and basic Ampre rating of the different wire types and guages. It also has alot of useful info and can be read in an afternoon.
