dogs give birth to mutliple puppies and needs nutrients for all, while humans need only the extra nutrients for usually one.

Well, lactation in humans requires an additional 500 calories/day which, for me, is about a 33% increase. That seems pretty darn large.

Because dogs give birth to proportionately larger progeny and because it is usually a multiple birth. It obviously takes proportionately more energy to provide food for six babies (the average dog litter) than for one (the average human litter)

maybe b/c dogs have many puppies, and humans - only 1-2 babies?
I mean even if 6 puppies weigh as much as one baby, they do need more nutrients.

It definatly does. Pregnant women need much more food and specific things, like lots of folic acid to keep their babies healthy.
