Lord Archer is an irrepressible rogue, though his wife is undoubtedly fragrant. His books are said to have benefitted from editing, but they're still lightweight romps. Still, if that is what you like, why not try Jilly Cooper (for romps), or more seriously, John Mortimer (for Rumpole)
Try visiting a library, and looking to see which books are well-thumbed.
I treasure the works of Jack Vance, who alas died recently, so no more word palaces from his pen.

I have only read a few of his, but love these ones.
I think not a penny more not a penny less is a fantastic book, the mini series didn't do it justice, as always.
I got Kane and Abel as a book of the month (I hadn't sent the card back to say no) years ago, I thought it was biblical, then my sister read it, and said it was great, so I read it and thought it was great, then my Mom and several Aunts, it came back in a well read state.
The prodigal daughter although good wasn't as good as the other two I've read.
