got a computer that i recently replaced a crashed hard drive inot i then reinstalled the operating system (windows xp professional) but the computer refuses to boot without a boot cd inserted into the drive, i went into BIOS settings and changed the boot sequence from CD-Rom to Hard Disc but it still tells me operating system not found, but as soon as u place a boot cd into the drive it boots immediately with no problem

hey i just did this....


Restart your computer and while the dell.com logo is up repeatedly press ctrl and f11 at the same time

this will bring up the already installed reboot system... :)

Follow the directios and your computer withh be restored:)

Usually a computer needs to read from a disc and copy or re-install the whole operating system, otherwise where will it get all of the data from? Long story short, you need the disc. It contains the whole program of the computer and the initial order to install.

Could be several reasons. Did you format the drive? if you did, did you put the /s command on it like this
format c:/s
the /s is to put the system file on the drive so it will boot.
