The things you could try before you start re installing your operating system is tweak it, This guide covers a lot of very simple tweaks including what processes can be shut down safely. http://www.tweakhound.com/ also from the same site download and run ccleaner because its a great program that can free space and resources.

In answering your question I will assume that you have a Windows XP computer. It would also be very helpful if you could provide further technical information about your computer system and can describe the computer’s behaviour in more details, otherwise most people can only provide you with general information. For an example of what information you can provide, visit my web site resources below.
Does Windows need all those 107 processes? Some processes may be running more than once as they may be needed by more than one application dependng on what it is that you are running. Other processess are mandatory for Windows to function reliably. But you may also have malicious processes running and these are the ones that you want to delete permanently. The only way that I know to find out about all those Windows processes is to search for more information about each one using a process library database. When you discover a malicious process, delete it and restart your computer to see if it comes up again. If it does appear again, then you need to do a deeper and thorough scan of your computer to remove the root application.
Check out the resources below for additional tools and information to help you out.

yes you should stop some of those processes, your should really only have about 30-40 running, track down what each process is connected to and shut it down if your not using it and you should see an improvement on your speed...best way to track em down is to bring up your task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and go to the process, then bring up a search folder and do a complete files and folders (including sub-folders) search of each process, that will tell you what folder the exe file is in which should give you a fair idea of what program is running it (e.g ypager.exe will be found in the yahoo messenger folder and zclient.exe in the zonelab folder)...once you've located each file decide what your not running and don't need on and just end process tree through the task manager by right clicking on the file and it should be the second option

Do you have too many applications open at the same time? If so, close some.
Other mentioned task manager. Having many running processes doesn't necessarily make your computer slow, if they don't use much of CPU. Use task manager to see which process is hogging the CPU. If the process name looks suspecious, search it on web to see if it's virus.

You can stop some of these by pressing ctrl+ alt+ del a box appears called task manager. go to the tab marked processes you will see all the processes running
IF big IF you know what they are, you can stop them if not leave them alone
If you do know what you are doing try putting msconfig into your run bar from you start menu you will see all the services and start up programs these can be disabled as well
