there refered to as "port holes" a styling cue from the 50's. some claimed as engine compartment cooling, others claimed they were just cool.

Some cars have air vents on the side to look more sporty and to let more air vent away from the engine. I've seen them on Buicks, and they give it a stylistic touch.
