I've worked on and off for Wal-mart since my senior year of high school (and I'm now going into my senior year of college). Wal-mart has actually been great to me for the most part, and I really enjoy working there. I have to say though, the INDIVIDUAL STORE plays a huge role in the whole experience.
My first store I worked at was pretty horrible. It was a brand new store, I helped with the opening. Some of the management weren't the best, the clientele were pretty obnoxious, etc. I still get bad feelings if I walk into that store.
However, I trained at another store while my store was being built and I liked it there. I decided to go back for a job during the summer at this store, and I've been there each summer since then. I really like my store. I like my coworkers. We have really good managers. It's a pretty good work environment.
All the things with the people working hours off the clock and not being paid, cause that would NEVER go at my store. It's not a corporate wide thing, it's some stores. They are so strict and meticulous with time and making sure that everyone gets breaks and punches out in time at my store. Not many people realize that that the company has things in place like getting locked out of our registers so we are forced to take our meal break. It knows when you clocked in and you can only go about 4 hours before it forces you to take your break. Also, once you punch out for your break, the computer will not allow you to punch back in unless you've completed at least 45 mins of the hour. You can't ring while your not clocked in.
When I first worked there as a minor, it was one of the most frustrating times since I needed to make sure I did not go a minute over working or the store would get huge fines. They followed the child labor laws to a tee.
Also about wages.. I get paid significantly above minimum wage. I have friends that have worked for other companies like CVS, Sears, Target.. and I started higher than them. My one friend had been working at one of these places for almost a year, with raises and all, and I was still making more than her.
About employees not being helpful, it depends on individuals as well. There are people who just don't care, and there are also people who go out there and really do their job. You'll have that in EVERY company.
And no, I'm not working for Wal-mart the rest of my life but I'm happy with the experiences I've had and what it has given me.

If you had learn the tale thoroughly you might have picked up on the truth that Wal-Mart executives mentioned that they're NOT telling their staff the way to vote. Keeping unions out of Wal-Mart will maintain the costs down and keep the roles. If unions are allowed into Wal-Mart, no longer simplest will the price of labour expand however the costs will skyrocket and there will probably be a massive quantity of process losses inside the organization. So for those who wish to vote for anyone like Obama then do not whine and whinge while the costs skyrocket at areas similar to Wal-Mart and your purchases of customer items are reduce to ribbons due to the fact you're being taxed to loss of life.

I had the unforunate experience of having Walmart as my first retail job my freshman year of college. No need to really go into detail since I'd imagine I'm preaching to the choir here, but it lasted all of a month. Long story short, the work environment is horrid and the staff is just as unfriendly and unhelpful to each other as they are to the customers. With good reason - they're paid peanuts, just like the rest of the industry's lower level workers.
And yet, despite the fact that they cause other businesses to file bankruptcy on a daily basis, we still shop there. I almost admire them, with all the negative publicity they have, the company is still gaining ground and dominating the market. Most retail managers would kill for a customer base like theirs.

They have terrible customer service. Every time I go there and I need help, they ignore me, or they are not around to help. The employees are always sitting around doing nothing. The cashiers are rude. Everybody I know had bad experiences at Walmart, same story too. They received no help. when needed.
I guess I I was getting paid so little, and the company treated me badly, I'd be grumpy too.

Wal Mart sucks because of the power it exerts on our nations buying habits. If a brand can't sell to Wal Mart, they run a serious risk of being shut out by brands that do because of Wal Mart's buying power. Wal Mart can also shut down more local businesses because of its buying power and ability to undercut prices.
They also underpay and abuse their workers, as well and removing competition for farms, by purchasing their veggies and junk from national conglomorate farms that put local farms out of work and practice massive environmental transgressions.
Basically, Wal Mart participates in nearly every unethical business practice in existance.
Also everything they sell (especially their clothing) is tacky.

One time I went to return something and they had a dead goldfish, in a bowl, laying on the counter because someone had returned it. Couldn't one of their associates have thrown it away??
