I have adopted cats that need homes. It wasn't them who benefited the most, it was me.
I know that sounds small in the grand scheme of things but you are giving a home to someone who needs it. Adult cats are harder to place than kittens. They are truly deserving of charity.
I never look at it that way though because they are part of my family now.
The other best thing I have done was to let my mom into my life after being very upset. It was a family thing so I won't go into detail but we were able to put it behind us.
I know you asked for the best thing and I gave you two. Truth be told, I could give you more best things.

1. Most significant thing: changed my name by deed poll for feminist reasons (why take it for granted that I should inherit my father's name when my mother is just as responsible for my existence?).
2. Most life-changing experience: spent a year backpacking round Latin America, seeing hearing tasting things I could never have imagined.
3. Most moral thing: supported my friend through alcoholicism and a breakdown when many friends just got p1ssed off with him.
4. Most fun thing: taking pills watching Orbital at Glastonbury!

my mum was taken to hospital by ambulance and a few weeks later i saw a couple of ambulance officers in the shopping mall. i went and bought them a big box of chocolates and gave it to them to say thank you for all the good work they do. i felt pretty good after that and now every friday i try to do something nice for someone. whether its paying for a old persons cup of coffee ot taking some donuts to my hairdressers. youd be amazed how good you feel

My mum was really in need of a new car,so me and brother went halves and bought her a one for her 50th birthday,she was so happy she actually cried. That's the best thing I can think of right now : )

stopped smoking and drinking beer and started facing life head on. it was really scary at first, having to feel all those feelings, but I learned to deal with them.
