Action/shounen anime:
Naruto - A young (and loud, mischievous, and very hyper) ninja boy named Naruto lives in the hidden shinobi village of Konoha, where he searches for his own worth and for those who recognize him for himself. Still running, 185 ep. Humor with very slight sexual content.
Bleach - Kurosaki Ichigo, a high school student, becomes a shinigami (death god) and defeats monsters and has adventures with a shinigami, Rukia, who gave him his powers. Still running, 83 ep. Humor, also very slight sexual content.
Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny - In the future, genetically enhanced humans (Coordinators) fight a devastating war against the original humans of Earth (Naturals). In the midst of this, two young Coordinators, Athrun and Kira, must fight each other in the clash between the two factions. 51 ep for both series, action and mecha.
Hellsing - In London, the legendary vampire Alucard fights for the Hellsing Agency and kills vampires, ghouls, and other monsters to protect the common people. Excellent series, 13 ep, lots of violence and blood. Good stuff.
Black Cat - In a futuristic world, everything is controlled by an elite group of assassins called the Chrono Numbers, the most infamous being Train Heartnet, the infamous No. 13 (aka Black Cat). But due to his guilty conscience, he leaves Chrono Numbers to become a sweeper (bounty hunter), and his adventures with a number of friends eventually lead him to confront his own issues. 23 ep, good series. Good action sequences, funny.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - In the future, after a terrible catastrophe called the Second Impact that wiped out most of the world, Tokyo 3 is being attacked by huge monsters called Angels. These can only be beaten by the Evangelions, biomechanical mecha that can only be pilotted by teens. Shinji Ikari is one such teen, and his experiences both build and tear at his conscience. 26 ep, mecha and action. This is a very profound anime and explores many physcological issues. It has heavy symbology and was very controversial.
Fullmetal Alchemist - In a world where alchemy can instantly transform and rearrange matter of any kind, two young brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, journey on a quest to find the Philosopher's Stone. 26 episodes, EXCELLENT. This is my absolute favorite anime, so I can't tell you more about it because it will give the plot away. Very funny and very deep.
Shoujo anime:
Fruits Basket - Tohru Honda, an orphaned high school girl, meets the Sohma family one day and moves into their house as the housekeeper. There, she finds that the members of the Sohma family will transform into the animals of the zodiac when hugged by members of the opposite sex, and general mayhem ensues. 26 ep, very cute and funny. Good anime for summer.
DNAngel - Daisuke, a young teen, comes from a legendary thief family; and his special "condition" is that whenever he thinks of his crush, he transforms into a very suave, handsome being called Dark, who is also called the "Legendary Phantom Thief." 26 ep, lots of fun.
Chobits - In the future, everyone has androids called persocoms who look and act exactly like humans. One young college student, Hideki, finds a mysteriously abandoned persocom with no memory and apparently no OS. What he doesn't know is that she may be the legendary Chobits, the only persocom with true AI... 26 ep. A bit of sexual content, but very calm and mellow anime. Sweet.
There are a lot more anime that I could recommend, but I am getting rather tired and I have finals tomorrow. I advise going to animenfo.com and looking at the top 100 anime list to get more.
