Most erections at night occur during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep (when most dreaming occurs). The spontaneous erections are caused by specific neuroreflexes that are stimulated during REM sleep.

The night time erections are usually noticeably harder than those when awake. The penis can stay erect for up to two hours nightly, and not all men who have erections during the night wake up with one in the morning.

It is thought to be to do with the pressure of the bladder on the prostrate.. Something triggers the flow of blood into the penis and stops it returning straight back into the body...

Once you empty your bladder, the erection subsides...

It really is a system test that your body does when your are asleep and relaxed. Of course it can be a huge ( or not so huge but useful ) benefit as a great way to start the day :o)

well it not necessarily a specific reason for an erection its just part of manhood they can have erection at any time of the day and he doesnt even have to be horny. so its just pretty normal for a man to have an erection.

The blood vessels during sleep become relaxed therefore allowing blood to flow more freely, it's when you wake up without woodies you have the start of problems ahead!

it could be one of two reasons:

1- our blood flow increases during the night so we recieve full circulation all over our bodies.

2- humans have an average of 12 dreams per night and maybe some of them are pretty arousing, though you don't remember them. That could be why we wake up with boners.

...and one more thing, women wake up horny too! i can't believe none of the females who posted here said that.

one of 2 reasons - either hes horny or he needs to pee. having an erection aka morning glory makes it difficult for a guy to pee so it is like a safety mechanism his body does to stop him peeing the bed (so ive been told!)
