I went to a ranch in British Columbia a few years ago, and loved it. It was completely secluded, in the middle of nowhere. You were assigned a horse at the beginning and taken out for a guided trail ride. After the first day, you could take the horse out by yourself or with a guide for an hour to all day. If you were going out for the whole day, the cook would pack you a lunch. I loved the freedom and flexibility. It was even cooler because the horse I was assigned to had foaled a few weeks before and the foal followed us everywhere. The ranch had 5 foals that spring that we could socialize with. The owners of the ranch really trusted the guests to not be stupid, which was a wonderful aspect. Also, the trail rides were not just walking and trotting. We could go out, find a nice stretch of trail or meadow, and just RUN. It was amazing.
I still consider it the best vacation I have ever taken.
