i am riding a thoroughbred and after we canter a little fast or run on the trail he will not walk afterwards unless he is right up the horse in front of him's butt. he didn't used to be that way and i have tried everything but nothing is working if anyone has any ideas please let me know thanks

Make sure that all your weight is in the saddle when you ask him to slow down and don't pull to hard on the reins. If he refuses to make the transition fast enough, make him circle sharply.

My horse is like that. It means they are just excited and full of energy, and just want to run. You could lunge him before you trail ride to get some of the extra energy out of him, or let him get his energy out on the trail. Once they get excited, it is hard to calm them down again. If you must calm him down, talk to him and pet his neck, and keep a relaxed position.

Maybe you should get in frount of the pack. My horse just needs a good lifting of the reins to slow down maybe yours is the same way . you also should practice in the arena.
