Ask represents people wanting to sell, not buy.

The bid and the ask represent the highest price someone is willing to pay for a stock and the lowest price someone is willing to accept for their stock. In stocks, cars, gasoline, or food the buyers and the sellers still have to come to an agreement as to what price they will settle upon. The bid and the ask would be best considered as lagging indicators sort of speak because they don't drive the price of a stock up or down but rather they go up or down based upon demand for the stock and the ability for buyers and sellers to reach an agreement.
