As a teenager (1950s by the way - this was radical then) my dad got annoyed with his folks one day so he got out his penknife and cut right round the trunk of this silver birch tree they had in the front garden. Then he cut again again, a little higher up, and managed to pull the bark right off all the way round in a neat strip. I think he thought he was going to kill the tree. Turns out what he did is a tree-surgeon trick that makes the tree shoot up much taller and straighter than it would normally be. The tree is still there, looking like a Norwegian ballet dancer on stilts.
