Solve,

(-17) - (-22) = -17 + 22

= 5

It may be helpful if you think of a negative number in the bracket as owing someone money

(I owe you $17) - (I owe you $22)

The negative sign above reverses the last term.

(I owe you $17) + (you owe me $22)

= (you owe me $5)

= $5
