When ALL sewing was done by hand, it was quite a chore to make an article of clothing. IF a stitch popped, a quick repair saved one heck of a lot of time, because, as you well know, if you mend something that just starts to break, it is easy. To fix the whole thing is really difficult.
"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" is obvious. The world is full of wisdom in these sayings.

I don't know where they came from but perhaps they share a biblical or spiritual meaning. This particular one means something like.....
Do what's right the first time instead of later having to rip out the mess we created in our life only to restart again. Thinking we've got it all sewed up only to find out there is more to learn.
I find all these little sayings very interesting and watch for them as people say them and are not always conscious of what they're saying.

Yeah, there are so many. I am guessing our frugal ancestors who didnt have plenty as we do today. They are passed down from generation to generation. Less haste, more speed, figure that one.
