The fathers of metal, without which metal wouldn't exist, are Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, although the first REAL metal band was Iron Maiden, in my opinion.

WE could go into the discussion about 70s glam rock here, there were a couple of bands with pretty heavy songs.. but both them and early 80s hard rock bands had soft albums. The first band who kept their entire discography heavy were Maiden.

Many people would say Led Zeppelin, which is my fave. Their name came from a joke between Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and Who drummer, Keith Moon about a demo they recorded of projected material, before Page formed the his new band. The joke referred to the music going over "like a brass balloon" and later brass balloon evolved to Lead, the Led Zeppelin. Notice the existence of a metal in the name. Others would say Black Sabbath. Ten Years After was heavy at about the same time, only less influential on later bands. Before Zep and Sabbath ,Deep Purple was already playing heavy, as were Iron Butterfly( notice the existence of a metal in the name), Cream, and Jimi Hendrix. BUT in 1967 Steppenwolf, an American band, released their classic Born to be Wild about motorcycle riders. They had an extremely heavy sound, especially for the time and were blues influenced as are/were all true heavy metal bands. The second verse of Born to be Wild begins thusly: "I like smoke and lightning; heavy metal thunder." This is the first time that the term "heavy metal" is used in rock music. Therefore I award the title "first (heavy) metal band to Steppenwolf!
