I'm am starting to plan a road trip from Memphis to Alaska and back for next summer for myself and maybe 3 friends (it's a 70 hour trip straight through from memphis to anchorage). Just wondering if anyone has some tips for road trip success? Any great places to mt climb, camp, hike, etc on the way that you've been too? How about in Anchorage, what is worth doing? Cheap yet quality train tickets, rental cars, bus tickets for the trip?

Anyone here ever done the same thing?

we're starting to plan now, but we're gonna leave it open enough to stop and do random things, have as much fun as possible. We're all in NROTC (Navy and MArine Options) so this will be the last chance for any trip like this for all ofus for a long time. Figure we should see the country we're gonna be protecting before going off to other ones (if we do).

This is a once in a lifetime trip.

Head west to CO and follow the Rockies up. Hit Rocky Mountain National Park in CO (hike up Long's Peak). Then up to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Then Glacier National Park.

But you must visit Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta/British Columbia. There is lots to do there and you will meet folks from all over the world there. Oh, and visit all the Canadian Hot Springs you can. They are very clean and friendly.

Take a fishing pole and stop and fish some of the creeks on the way up.

Have fun.

You should take a day trip up a trail in the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico. But it's not all hot, take a sweater for when you get to the top. Also, visit the Apache Indian reservations in Arizona.

If you're from here in Tennessee, then you'll surely appreciate the dry air in the desert. It was 120 degrees when I was there and it felt like 80 here. There's no humidity to bog you down.

You can't go all that way without stopping in Vegas, even for just a day. Well, these are the places I've been out west, so be careful and have fun on your trip!

Not sure about the southern areas, but I'm from Anchorage and there's lots to do up here. Glaciers, wildlife viewing, kayaking, Mnt biking, fishing, hiking, you name it (don't forget your bug spray!) It all costs money of course, one good trip might be to drive to Valdez instead of Anchorage, then take the ferry to Whittier and drive the rest of the way to Anchorage. If you have a few people, the cost wouldn't be too bad, and you'd get to see Prince WIlliam Sound by water. There's two bases up here too, Elmendorf and Ft. Rich, so you could probably use your military ID to rent gear and save some money.

The best advice I can give you, is to make sure you and your friends will get along in a bad situation. My best friend and I took a road trip together a few times and they're a blast. We can talk for hours and hours about nothing, we like similar music so we didn't get bored or ticked off. Make sure you all agree on an who pay's for what before you set off on the trip (like who ever owns the car doesn't pay for gas type thing). Things like that.
I hope you have a blast on your trip!

Well, the only advice I have is to make sure you all have current passports, and all your shots are up to date and maybe make sure everyone has health coverage at the time. You never know what can happen and no one wants to find out they are unprepared in another country (Canada) or just so far from home. Best wishes

A few in my family have done it. They said that one of the most useful things was a AAA guide book. Descriptions of all places (hotels, restaurants, sights) were right on the money. Maybe that helps a bit.
