On current drives removing the jumper from the second drive will suffice, plus as long as the first drive is on the primary ide controller and the first in line you shoudl be all set. You could have 4 hard drives in your computer, or more with newer motherboards..

If u are not conversant with messing around with jumpers and cable, simply try this method. Current adaptor technology now allows you to add a HDD to your computer via USB connect.

Go buy this IDE to USB convertor and simply plug into your USB port.

If u sorted out the manual jumper settings, this option allows you to set up a third HDD of any sizes u can afford to buy!

This option also let u fit your "external" HDD in a flashy casing like an External USB Drive available on the market.

Recently when I bought a laptop I also purchased an extra laptop hdd and connected it via USB. I can also connect this extra drive via USB to my other Desktop PCs. It also functions as a nifty small portable backup drive or for carrying work data, etc. A laptop hdd is only 2inches by 3inches big!

In fact u can have as many "external" hdd to as many USB ports u have on your box.

Answering your question though, look at the top of your HDD - there are diagrams showing where u should place the jumper to configure as Slave. Different brands have different jumper positions.

Set the MDT jumper to "Slave". Do not use CS! Ever!

You should make them both CS (Cable Select) and put the Maxtor at the endof the cable.

By making one as master and the other as slave.
put jumper at the place where it mentioned as SL for slave.
