You didn't say WHERE in Japan, so I mostly stayed with Tokyo and gave you a few other sites too. It starts to get HOT and HUMID in July and possibly we'll still have some rain.(?) The weather has been strange this year. Bring light, comfortable clothes. Carry handkerchiefs and mini towels in your bag. (You can get these once here, they're found just about everywhere.) Hope this helps, have a great time!

I lived in Japan. By far the best place is Kyoto for seeing historical places. Just an hour south of Kyoto by JR Train is Osaka. They have the best Japanese food and night life. Also the people in Osaka are really laid back. Spend a week in Kyoto and three days in Osaka and you will get a real view of Japan.

Kyoto - Kiyomizu Temple, Kinkakuji Temple.
Nara - Todaiji Temple
Himeji - Himeji Castle (very beautiful)
Osaka - Great food. Try Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki, they are great.

Try "Izakaya", Japanese style bar, with a lot of small dishes. That is how the japanese people enjoy night out.

I personaly don't like Tokyo so much. It is just a large city which seems to lot like any other large city in the world these days.

Definitely kyoto..gion corner is where geisha history is. lots of temples/pagoda here too. dont be like everyone else and go to Tokyo...try Osaka instead...fantastic with everything you could possibly want.Go up Umeda sky building for 360 deg views of Osaka.Juso (Hankyu line) interesting but also red light district. Shinsaibashi is amazing...have to see it to believe it. Also go to Himeji and visit the castle. Nara is also amazing.North is Amanohashidate which is beautiful and by the sea. Pluck up the courage and open some of those small doors in back streets...amazing small 'local' pub/restaurants..show respect and they will invite you in..just go with the flow. Can be REALLY hot and humid. tip...buy a flannel and a plastic drink beaker. put flannel in beaker and fill with water.freeze the whole thing for a few hours. take it with you on trips..will stay cool for ages. Also its not girlie for males to use a fan in japan. If you fancy a roantic night of fun, go to a 'love hotel'....themed rooms of just about everything. lots in Tenoji...really fun. Open your mind & enjoy! oh and try and learn some basic language..it WILL help and they will appreciate it. look up the Kansai time out for thing to do, help etc. magazine and on-line.

If you are going in July, be sure to pack clothes for HOT weather. You'll probably want to go to Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Akihabara if this is your first trip. Akihabara has all sorts of electronics that you won't find anywhere else. Shinjuku and Shibuya have great shopping places as well as a vibrant nightlife. And by all means, ride the trains.

Well, I went to Okinawa, and it was wodnerful-but they do not concider themselves Japanese. I suggest going, but understand that. If you speak Japanese stay at a traditional ryukan (inn). They are a wonderful experience. i stayed at one that served breakfast and dinner-food like you wouldn't believe! (i was also the first forigener to stay there-in tokyo! still!). Go to Hokkaido if you are not keen on the heat. There are also some ancinet forests still around Japan. Its a neat place-if you any friend there, hook up with them and they will show you stuff that no tour book ever would.

For your first time, you should of course go to Tokyo but if you are more interested in cultural history I'd recommend Nara as it has some of the greatest temples in all or Japan and it isn't as touristy as Kyoto.

I believe the best place is Tokyo because it is soooo amazing, beautiful, and you'd probably enjoy it a ton, and it has a great night/party/club/bar scene too
