Way back in 1952 Porsche introduced a new engine for their 356. It was larger displacement and much more powerful (it made a whopping 70 hp, by the way) and so they called it "super". The "super" designation was later shortened to just "s" and was reserved for the highest performance cars. Later models were called "SC" which stood for super carerra. The "S" designation and the "SC" have both been re-used in various other car models from Porsche. Nowadays, the "S" option adds about ten thousand dollars to the price tag, so perhaps it would be more appropriate to use "$" instead ;-)

Basically the S just means the engine is more powerful. For example, the Carrera S is faster than the Carrera. I think the S might possibly stand for supercharger.

It doesn't stand for anything. Just like a Ford F150, the F150 doesn't mean anything, it's just a way to measure the state of the car in comparison to the rest of the line.
