If its secured tight (noting loose) sure , but you might consider how thick its going to be afterwards, you might just want to remove it, and if you can it should have a good resale value.

Why on earth would you want to cover marble? If it's dirty, clean it - there are products on the market just for that purpose. Marble is what most people want but can't afford.
If you really want to get rid of the marble, don't cover it up - take it out and sell it, then replace it with fire brick and tile over that.

May be a big problem, especially if the marble is smooth and shiney. The less porous the tougher the job. You may want to get ahold of a gravestone cutter to see what they may be able to do for you on site. I am thinking that if they etch it, it may create a good base for the glue to adhere to permanently in order for the tile to stick. Definately not a do it yourself job.
