both the 2 top teams in each group progress, and the wilnner of the group A will play the runner up of group B and the runner up of A will play the winner of Group b and so on...winner of C play Runner up of D etc..... this ensures that seeded teams ( the favourites) will not play each other until quarter final or semi final stages..because it is deemed better for the competition if the favourites don't get knocked out too early...after the second round, the 4 quarter finals are played and then they winners progress to the semi finals and then onto the final...the two losing semi finalists play each other for 3rd place bragging rights...I hope this was a help...

Not at first. At the beginning, every team in each group plays each other. The top two from every group are the ones who move forward.
