I'm a fifteen year old male between 125 and 135 pounds. How many minutes should it take me to run a mile on a track and on the street?

Mainly, I'm concerned with state standards for high schoolers, but I'm also thinking of doing Cross Country or Track. Currently, I can run one mile in 7:58 on a track, and 8:58 on the street.

Not to throw cold water on your ambition, but there are a lot of high school runners who jog their warm-up at 8:00 per mile.

The good news is that you have all summer to get in better shape before you cross country practice starts in mid-August.

You should check with the team coach to see what he/she reccommends for a summer workout schedule.

You are going to have to race 3+ miles so you should start working on increasing your distance. Start out by running until you are tired, then rest by walking for about half the length of time that you ran. Then run again.

When you get comfortable, lengthen the runs and shorten the walks.

You should also run shorter distances than the mile, but at a fastere pace.

You will probably be running over hills so you should find a hill and run up and down that about once a week.

As far as high school standards, top high school runners can run 5K in around 15:00 which is better than 5:00 perl mile.
For cross country, I would work up

I run just about 10 miles a day and i always have a big dinner and breakfast, thats high in carbs. But just before a run i like to make sure I've had a bottle or water or two (depending on how hot it is) and usually a power bar or something with a few carbs and protein When I first started running about year and a half ago i couldn't even do a mile without stopping, the hardest part is the stress on your knees and ankles, if your not use to the road, go back and fourth between it and the dirt till you build up to staying on the asphalt . GOOD LUCK!

Hey, that's better than my personal best of 9:15! And I'm 14 and 150!

As for state qualifying for various sports it obviously depends on how fast you run. I think that with a mile time of around 8 mins. there's no way you can make states; the other kids there like seniors and some juniors are just too good. Some of their times are seconds within 4 mins. like in my state. Our high school's best kid got something around 4:30 at states and he got something like 25th at the State Open.

As for cross country I have no clue what the standards are. I've never done or have talked to anyone on the CC team about good times. But don't worry, you have a lot of time to get better because you're probably only a freshman or sophomore from my estimate based on your age so you've got 2 or 3 years to work on it. If you really work on it you could get down below 6 mins. in 2 years and maybe even close to 5 mins. the next year if you're a freshman now.

Traditionally, a 7-minute mile is the goal. I am in very good physical condition and play a variety of running sports, and I can run the mile in 7:30. One of the guys that I know can run it in 6:45, though.

I ran about a 6 - 7 minute mile when I was on the JV Cross Country team in HS. My 5K times ranged from 18:30-22:00. I weighed about 110 at the time.

Different people adapt to running in different ways, I don't know what your state standard is, but 7.58 on the track sounds a bit slow to me. When I was 15 I could do the mile in 5.40, but I did run for my county (Essex, England). I would be aiming to bring your time down to around 6.30

A mile should take you less than 5 minutes if you are really good. You can work towards it with help from a coach.

It should take you no more than 8:30 on the street, and 8:00 on a track.

The average on a track is about 8 min. Some professional track athletes can do it in 4 min. or less.

Well, 4 minutes is the record every one wants to break, but that is for pro's I think about 6 minutes is in line for you.
