I limit the actual number of icons on my desktop to the very essential, and mostly launch apps and files from my quick launch bar or the office shortcut bar.
For the icons I do have, I created my own using MS paint and use a 100 pixel by 100 pixel layout. I save the file as a bmp file, but then change the extension to ico to use it as an icon.

My Network Place icon is a self-made image of a face-on spiral galaxy and My Documents is a ringed planet (like Saturn). Most of my icons are based on astronomy, space exploration, Star Trek and Star Wars.

In the center of my screen is a picture of my fiance's band, The Space Squirrells. It will be a picture I will always treasure as it was taken while all the members were still alive. Her cousin, Justy died two years ago and my fiance passed away in January.
