Good question. Probably because celebrities are "glamorous" and more visible than the government. Following them also requires much less thought and effort than paying attention to the government. If people pay attention to the government, they usually start to get uncomfortable with what they see, so they stay away or they get involved and forget the celebrities. I hope more people forget the celebrities, who are just human beings like all of us, and start getting involved in the world around them!

Because the corporate CEOs that most countries have as presidents and as media-conglomerate owners, want people to remain as dumbed-down, ignorant and shallow as possible.
That's why they cut down education budgets, that's why they privatize universities, that's why the media pays so much attention to sports or the relationships and personal lives of celebrities like brad pitt, or paris hilton, or whatever-spoilt-rich-bastard.
Those in power don't want us to be worried about what they are doing in power. They don't want us to care about the state of education or healthcare, the devaluation of the dollar, or the increasingly fast closing of factories in the west to move production to third world dictatorships.
They don't want us to find out how they are screwing us. And the saddest part is that most of us actually do get carried away by the "shiny box" or the "gossip magazine" and we indeed stop caring about politics or knowledge as a whole until its too late.

Regardless of what Spico says, the real reason is that its a celebrities job to be known. The northern states know the celebrities since most of the pop stars appeal to a more low-brow audience.

Beats me. I fail to see the appeal of celebrities. I just don't care about them or their scandals or whatever. Other than when they are working (entertaining), I don't want to have to see or hear them.

But politicians are much more interesting. I'm always amused by the drunken babblings of Ted Kennedy, for example. Politics and government are interesting. Moreso than how many ponies Britney is sleeping with.

the celebrities are showcased more than the government because thats what the government wants. they don't want us to see what they are really doing to us, which is pretty much fking us over big time. besides, have u ever tried to watch
c-span, msnbc, etc for more than a couple minutes? they practically beg u to change the channel or fall asleep where ur standing!

Unfortunately the TV news and newspapers (and the internet) put celebrity stories right up there with the news.

in grade school and high school people deal with rumors right? becuz they have nothing better to do.
I think people are more interested in other peoples problems than what they should be, i mean its none of our business but it gives us something to do. If that makes sense, it makes people feel better knowing that others have worse problems than us. they don't get this kind of information about the countries gov.
