A hacker is very good programmer. And a hack is a smart way around a problem in your code. A cracker is someone who cracks or pirates software. In more common use a hacker is someone who breaks into people's e-mail, bank accounts and so on for malicious reasons. So usin ghte more common meaning of hacker and cracker, they are both the same...criminals. Otherwise to crack software you need to be goos a t programming, so i guess that would mean a cracker is a hacker.

The media tends to paint everything with a fairly broad brush, so usually both of these terms mean a criminal who breaks into computer systems. These do have some other meanings outside of television news idiocy.

A "Hacker" was originally someone who was very, very good. Used in this sense, it's a good compliment. Because the term has gained some other meanings, though, the context is important.

"Cracker" tends to be used more when referring to people breaking into systems, or reverse engineering things usually for malicious purposes. A cracker may be a hacker, but he's actively causing problems. Alternatively, he may be a script kiddie, using someone else's work for his own gain without understanding the details of what he's doing.

Neither of these are titles to aspire to. Seriously calling yourself a hacker is presumptuous, and calling yourself a cracker will make you a joke. Don't obsess with the terms, obsess with the technology.
