I'm assuming you just need to simplify.
To simplify you will need to distribute the -8
-8(3y^2 - 12)
= -8(3y^2) + (-8)(-12)
= -24y^2 + 96
Answer: -24y^2 + 96
The symbol ^ means it is raised to a power.

-8(3y^2-12)
first put "-8" in one side.so, you will see

=(3y^2-12) right?

Then see if there is anything common

= 3(y^2-4) ok?

Now factor the #'s in the parenthesis

= 3(y+2)(y-2) get it?

Remember the "-8"?

Combine everything, you will see this.

= -8*3(y+2)(y-2).

Now multiply "-8 and 3"

= -24(y+2)(y-2) >this is the Answer :)

-8(3y^2-12)
distribute
-24y^2+96=a
-24y^2+96-96=a-96
-24y^2/-24=(a-96)/-24
y^2=(a-96)/-24
y=[Squareroote:(a-96)/-24]

now we'll set the equation equal to zero follow the steps i just gave and you get this.

-24y^2+96=0
-24y^2+96-96=0-96
-24y^2=-96
-24y^2/-24=-96/-24
y^2=4
squareroot y^2=y
squareroot 4=2
y=2
