A great author of contemporary romance is Katie MacAlister.
Of course, Danielle Steele, Nora Roberts, Meg Cabot, Carly Phillips, Dorothea Benton Frank, Nicholas Sparks, Janet Evanovich, and Sophie Kinsella are very popular.

The Jewel Of the Sun
Tears of the Moon
Heart of the Sea
They're are a romance trilogy by Nora Roberts. She has alot of good romance trilogies. I'm not the biggest romance fan but I really like her romance because they're not the 'he threw her down on the table and ravished her while there was an unnatural breeze and some how his hair was blowing in it' type.

UMM... I can't think of any off the top of my head, but your ideas don't need to be contemporary. The basic boy-meets-girl set-up is very simple yet popular. So why don't you make it so.... the girl meets the guy, they become friends, he moves to another part of the world, 10 years later she meets him, hates him, realizes he's her long-lost friend, gives him moral lessons, and then falls for him in the process of being a good friend? Just an idea that I would like to read about... good luck!

It's something that happend, in real life. So, it will have success. Read "Gone by the wind", "Romeo and Julliet" "West side story"
"Doctor Zhivago"
Also try to read "Great american love stories" book (by Rosenthal, Lucy Editor) or stories of Fitzgerald, Hemingway, James, Melville, Dorothy Parker, Runyon, Welty or Wharton
