The DaVinci Code was on the New York Times bestseller list for over a year now, and it's still being sold and read.
The major controversy in the story is that the Holy Grail isn't a cup, but is the bloodline of Jesus Christ, and that Jesus didn't die on the cross and was resurrected in three days, but married Mary Magdalene and had children.

The greatest controversy about the book/movie is that DiVinci clams that Jesus didn't die on the cross, and instead married Mary (a prostitute ) and had children. This would insinuate that there is a blood line to this day that goes back to Jesus. The idea that Jesus didn't die on the cross for our sins is a question on the bible and is upsetting to many religions.

It is in the news a lot ( I won't say famous because fame grants acceptance ) because of its controversy. It takes the idea that Jesus might of had a child with Mary Magdalene. This is a problem for most Christians because it would mean that Jesus was a MAN, human, not DIVINE.

It is a suspenseful mystery, a real page turner. It is a struggle between right vs might. And it proposes a controversial new idea on the life of Jesus Christ the makes some people wonder "what if".

It was written to spark interest in religion and talk about it. The controversy is that the book claims that Jesus and Mary Magilin (sp?) had a child and that their are children of christ walking around.

Why is it popular? I don't know. It was poorly written, but engaging.
Although it is labelled FICTION, some religious people seem to have thin skins about some statements in the book.

Da Vinci's book (and the movie made after the book) suck.
He is a big liar.
