I have had a piece of glass in my foot for 24 hours. I didn't take it out before because I didn't have time to sit down and search for it. I've taken a walk (I know, bad idea) and I've tried locating it. Is it too far into the foot to find it? Should I just leave it there? What would happen?

By the way- I have no insurance and only a health department that may or may not do something like take this out for me. I can't just "go to the doctor" because I don't have one.

Well your best bet is to try and find it and remove it, mostly because there is always a chance of infection. However if you can't find it and its not really bothering you and its a relitively small piece it should be ok for now. Your body will probably actually work it out after a while, much like it does a sliver. But if its a bigger piece, becomes painful, red or swollen you need to hobble yourself down to the doctor's office as fast as your other foot can carry you!

I see where "MAXX" suggested 'Black Tar Salve', ..never heard of it. BUT...if this piece of glass (as you say) needs to be searched for, chances are it's just a sliver. I have found on a personal basis of knowledge, if you know where the entry wound is, take a small (1 inch or so) piece of adhesive tape and press it over the entry spot. Duct tape will also do the trick. The sliver may take a day or so to surface, but it will come to the top layer of your skin and you should be able to squeeze it out by applying pressure to two sides of the entry spot. Good luck.
As for the people in NYC.........Your guess is as good as mine.

Find it as soon as possible and get it out! If you get it out yourself, please remember to clean your wound very well and apply a clean dressing over it, like some Neosporin, gauze, and an Ace bandage. Then, make sure you wash it twice a day and change the gauze each time. If you can't, please go to a doctor and have him or her do it! You seriously could be at-risk for an infection because of the dirt and germs associated with the piece of glass in your foot. Go, take care of it, now!

old remedy, its called "black tar salve" it has another modern name i cannot spell but will try, icthamol ointment. ask you pharmacist, they will know. got glass in my feet all the time when i was younger and used it. draws the glass right out. and is good for splinters of wood or metal. i agree with everyone else you have to do something. the ointment works 95% of time. depends on how deep. good luck.

you need to get it out now. the longer it takes u to get it out the more its going to hurt because the skin will start growing over it a little. if you wait too long you might need surgery to get it out. and every hour its in your risking a bigger infection
