I'm planning on taking the GREs in November and I was just wondering if anyone who had taken them already had any study hints.

Preparation depends on what kind of graduate program you want to enter. I don't know of a single elite university that takes the general GRE seriously -- they only want to see you break 500 in each section.

I took the GRE cold. I prepped for 3 days using a Princeton Review GRE book I bought at Barnes & Noble http://www.bn.com and scored 1980 on my first and only attempt.

the only thing I really needed to practice was using my computer to take the test. i was accustomed to paper exams, so CBE was different for me.

If your vocab is weak, then by all means get a friend to hlep you with a wordlist. http://www.m-w.com has a Word of the Day column. very good practice!

And if you are taking a subject exam like bio, chem, physics, etc, then good luck. it's those tests that require studying because they're so comprehensive.

I took the regular GRE and the biology GRE. Definitely buy a test prep book to familiarize yourself with the format of the test (it really saves time when you don't have to read the directions five times) and get you comfortable. There's really nothing more you can do with the subject tests. But the general GRE has some spots I really struggled with, especially the analytical section. Its so different from the regular SAT-style questions. Make sure you practice those questions a lot, and take a lot of practice exams.

If you're not prepared to even take the GRE's then you're not prepare to enter graduate school. Reconsider your plan. Study habits are something you should have picked up while doing undergraduate work.

Goto your local Barnes&Noble or other bookstore and get a study guide. Make sure it includes sample tests with answers so you can practice.

I bought the Barron's (Brownstein, Weiner and Green) book on how to prepare for the GRE.
Highly recommend it.
