Yes, go to the library or local bookstore. In the legal section, you will find a book (perhaps by Nolo Press) on the topic of changing a name.
Since he is a minor, he will need approval of ALL parental guardians, I recall. If you are the only living guardian, you're set. Alternatively, he can wait until he is 18.
When I changed my name (in California), I needed to post a notice in a newspaper of record once weekly for 4 weeks. Then I presented the verification of publication with a standard form to a court, and a judge's signature made it official. I was surprised that there was no hearing at all, a court clerk simply took the form, and returned a few minutes later with a seal and signature.
Then comes the next part, which is informing all the financial (banks, bills, accounts) and government agencies (social security, motor vehicles, school system) of the change. Save your original form, give them copies. Since gals change their last name all the time, one of my banks changed my gender from Male to Female, assuming I was a woman who got married. It was corrected easily, and that was the worst problem I had.
Good luck!

I also had my name changed when I was a minor. My mother posted an ad in the local paper for a fixed period of time to make sure no one objected to the name change. You can change your name to anything as long as no one objects. No one objected and we all recieved name change certificates. It was that simple.
I was younger than 17 when I made that decision; mostly I did it because my mom and my sister were doing it. But now I want to change it back. My last name does not connect me to anyone. It has a good meaning but it is not my lineage.
He is old enough to decide what he wants his name to be, so I say let him do it. This is the best time to do it, while he is young because if he waits, he will have alot more documents to change. I am 22 and I am going to do it as soon as possibe so that I won't have so many things to change over.

i would not provide him your stepfathers final call. i might the two bypass which comprise your final call or the father's final call. yet pondering this guy maximum possibly won't play an lively place on your son's existence, i'm leaning in the direction of your final call. later on down the line once you meet a solid guy and get married, he could be prepared to undertake your son, pondering his father is a deadbeat. Then as a relatives you will possibly all have a similar final call.

I don't see the harm in it. Why would he pay if he didn't already feel like he had his name (in heart). You have no one to explain it to, you have the proof with the child support and it will give your son a sense of ownership to a bloodline or family.

this is a good but difficult question-yes the young man can legally adopt or adapt any name he chooses and through legal resources make this change-what is sticky is when it comes to matters of the heart-it would be better to have a heart-to-heart with his current father and come to understanding before doing this--i personnally have done this myself-i loved my deceased father so much that i took his name and i truely have no regret for my decision

Names can be changed to anything you want if you take the proper procedures to do so. There is a "Friends" episode on that, where Phoebe changed her name to something Banana Hammick and her husband changed it to Crap Bag.

petition the court for a name change, it might cost some money ($500) but if it's worth it, then it's worth it.
I had a crazy cousin who changed his name to ..... (his name) Dragon Lee. He liked Bruce Lee alot and went off the deep end with it! Loony Toony.
