for anyone who has/had a dial-up internet connection, is there any tips or programs or something that will make it more tolerable? I've tried almost every dial-up service around, and none of them have worked very well...I know dial-up can only get to 56K, but i'm never getting over 30K...anything that can help?

I assume switching to broadband isn't possible. Well, you can definitely optimize your dial up connection. Below are articles you can read:

1. Geek to Live: How to survive a slow Internet connection --by Lifehacker.com (http://www.lifehacker.com/software/geek-to-live/geek-to-live-how-to-survive-a-slow-internet-connection-140120.php)

2. Tweak your 56k dial-up modem at JohnTP’s Home (http://www.johntp.com/2006/02/12/tweak-your-56k-dial-up-modem/)

3. Hacking Windows XP: Speed Up Your Network and Internet Access (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1722550,00.asp)

There are two freewares mentioned in the articles. TCP optimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe) and CableNut. TCP Optimizer is very easy to use. You just select the connection type you use and press apply and you're finished. CableNut is more geared for techies but ExtremeTech's article gives you step by step instructions.

Lastly, there are three ISP that i know of that offer dial up acceleration which is 5x faster than regular dialup 1. Earthlink, 2. AOL and 3. PeoplePC. Using compression technology, caching and image qaulity tuning, it can really boost your browser speed.

If broadband isn't available where you live, get two way satellite internet. It's as fast as DSL (except for gaming).

To answer your question though, what I did when I had dialup I had more than one web browser window open. I'd click on one to load then go read the other and vice versa. That why I'd always be reading one web page while another is loading and didn't really notice exactly how slow it was.

It is probably not the service but the house you live in. I had the same service and moved three miles to a house with bad phone lines and never got over 26K. Get your house rewired or get any type of broadband if at all possible.

ok have you tried unisereve??? there speed is usually around 45.

it could also be your computer or your modem inside your computer. there are providers who have faster dial up internet you have to buy a dish about $150 CAN and then pay about $80 to $100 CAN. chek out

To get your dial-up to work, do you have to run along side your computer and push like the Flintstones' car?
