It depends on what you mean by economical. Gas mileage or average maintenance. Gas mileages are similar comparison from 4 cyl gas and a rotary. Mazda incorporates thw Wenkle Rotary engine. This engine was devceloped in the early 80's with little success. But by todays standards the rotary has jumped in reliability in leaps and bounds. The rotary utilizes a lot less moving parts, so in the long run it is more economical to operate. But the cost of a rotary is much higher to purchase compared to a 4cyl gas engine. Also look at how many technicians in local garages feel comfortable with on working with the rotary engines. You hardly ever see the rotary engine in your local garages. Do some background work to see if the rotary engines were ever recalled for any failures.
Hope i helped you a little....Ron

The recipricating engine will use HEAPS less fuel than a rotary. The reason is very simple:-

Piston = Power stroke every second rev per cylinder.
Rotary = Three power strokes per rev per rotor.
Power stroke = burning fuel.
