i have used every version of windows right back to 3.1 and i have found windows xp to be the one that fits your criteria
i will explain this in the following parts
1)support>windows xp is the most supported operating system ever with 95% of all the software made designed to run on it
2)ease of use>it is the easiest system yet with usb 2.0 and plug and play support meaning no need to take a 3 week course to install a printer, everything is done for you.
3)cheap to buy or upgrade>windows xp can be bought for £60 and pro for £95 and it can easily be upgraded with updates such as "service pack 2" and "photo story"
4)supports most software>like i said before ,xp is the dominant force in home computing and will continue to be ,even when vista arrives
5)stable and secure>windows xp is by far the most stable system incorpirating system restore for any harmfull changes and support for all the leading security software such as norton, mcafee, bit defender, and f-secure among others
the main problem with older op\systems like 95,98,me is the lack of service support so security patches are no longer avalible
as for mac os and linux, there day will come but with the lack of avalible software this will be a long time coming
amiga is no longer a recognized system but was good in its day,i used to own a amiga 1200 and i was one of the lucky ones with a 250mb hard drive, yes a 250mb(that was huge in them days
so in my 16 years of experience i would have to say that xp is the no.1 operating system and windows 98 coming second

Well windows is good, but the Linux OS has almost no virus's because most people use windows and people dont bother with Linux users.

IN my humble opinion Windows XP, I've heard that Windows Vista will be even better and more secure, I can't wait to try the Beta Version in a Dual Boot situation.

Windows XP
1 2 4

Linux
3 5
The support on linux is getting better, but it is still a problem.
Cost is great...usually free. I run Xandros along side of Windows XP in a dual boot system.

Good luck.

I like Ubuntu Linux, but that isn't for everyone. Windows XP is best for most people.

LINUX... XP is a big no-no as it runs with open ports making it open to any kind of hack.....also the plug and play facility leave s computer open to all attacks (disable it if you run XP)

Gotta luv XP. I do not recommend Millenium. It sucks and my computer kept locking up. I constantly had to do a hard shut down. Moved to XP, no more problems, it is so user friendly also.
